Disease & Disease Management
ID - 70370 The Social Impact of Autism - The Patient Experience
This learning program is designed to introduce you to the social impacts of autism by following the case of a young autistic patient named Ethan who also demonstrates irritable and aggressive behavior. Through the patient, his parents, and the clinical professionals who care for him, you will be introduced to the clinical presentation, epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of autism from a more personal perspective. The case opens with the patient at age 6, a few years after his diagnosis, and then progresses through a follow-up appointment at the age of 11. At each time point, you will explore the case from the perspective of the patient’s family as well as 1 or more individuals who are part of the patient’s circle of care, including his family doctor, child psychiatrist, and behavioral therapist.
Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:
- Define autism and describe its typical clinical presentation
- Describe the diagnostic procedures used to establish a diagnosis of autism in this case (procedures may vary by age of child and severity of symptoms)
- Discuss the differential diagnosis of autism
- List some of the comorbid conditions that may accompany autism
- Describe behavioral, educational, and pharmacologic therapeutic options available for autism and discuss their relative risks and benefits
- Discuss the emotional, social, and financial impacts a diagnosis of autism can have on a patient’s family
